There are two times of year that have been historically recognized as being when “the veil is thin,” Beltaine and Samhain. The “veil” is a rather poetic and lovely name for the barrier between the seen and unseen, known and unknown, living and dead. It’s described as a veil because it isn’t an impenetrable wall, but rather a semi-permeable membrane, sort of like a gauzy fabric. Some folks can see and feel things through it all the time, while others might find it harder to connect across the veil most of the time. Either way, it’s generally thought to be easier to reach across at times when the barrier is thinner, a crack in time between the end of one season and the beginning of the next.
You can also cultivate a stronger ability in yourself through meditation, working with certain stones, and by the use of herbs. Here is my formula for a tea designed to encourage psychic abilities and allow one to perceive realities beyond the veil.
Please note: A good herbalist(poisoner) knows that there’s often a fine line between benefic and malefic doses of medicine; please always exercise caution when using herbs. Just because something is natural does not mean it is harmless.
Our Formulary
Borage (Borago officinalis):
An infusion can induce psychic powers.
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris):
Used in magic as a love-divining herb and can be used to induce prophetic dreams when burned or drunk as an infusion before scrying. Can aid in astral travel if placed near the bed. Was used to bless shamans before “entering the flight of the soul,” and is an ingredient in traditional flying ointments.
Rose (Rosa damascena):
A tea of rosebuds drunk before bed can induce prophetic dreams.
Saffron (Crocus sativa):
Drinking an infusion of saffron can enable you to foresee the future.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium):
Yarrow sticks are used for divination in the I Ching; the best ones are collected from plants growing on Confucius’ grave. Drinking an infusion of yarrow flowers is said to improve psychic powers.
