There are times when we may feel surrounded by shadows, when the light seems distant and hard to reach; it is at these times that it is essential to rekindle our own inner light. As Rumi said, "If light is in your heart, you will find your way home.”
Just as people have done for centuries, we light candles to ward off the darkness and to keep the hope of a brighter future burning within. It’s the principle of sympathetic magic.
For this spell you will need:
A quiet place to sit comfortably where you will not be disturbed
A small candle, preferably silver or white
A small, but fairly deep dish of salt (salt cleanses away negativity)
A white or yellow cloth, especially a sparkly one
Matches or a lighter
Place the cloth over a hard surface (a table or even the floor), place the dish of salt on top and set the candle in the salt to hold it upright; this is your working altar for the spell!
Get comfortable in front of your altar and take a moment to center yourself. Feel your body in the space, feel the chair or the floor under you, feel your chest rise and fall with your breath, feel that you are a part of nature and nature always renews itself. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
Take as long as you need to become present in the space; if you struggle with distracting or intrusive thoughts try putting music on softly in the background to quiet your inner noise.
Light your candle and look deeply into the flame. State an intention out loud, such as “I carry the light of hope within me, as this candle burns it kindles my inner flame and I become a beacon of light in the world.”
Close your eyes and visualize a soft light in your heart. As you observe the light, it begins to glow more and more brightly. The light begins to spread throughout your body until you are entirely filled with light. Your radiance emanates from you and reaches out beyond you and your home, touching first your neighborhood, then your city, your state, your country, and the world. Your light brings hope, it brings joy, and it helps others to rekindle their own inner flame.
Spend as long as you like visualizing this, do it until you feel it in your bones and know it to be true. When you’re ready, open your eyes and observe the candle flame again.
Say, “And so it is!”
Let the candle finish burning in a safe place. Repeat as often as necessary!
Thank you for being a light in the world.
